Maunsell is the leading consultant for transportation projects in Asia, with over 2,000 staff in Hong Kong alone. Since our involvement in the first stage of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway in the mid-seventies, we have played a leading role in the development of the rail network in Hong Kong, together with those in Singapore, Bangkok, Taiwan and Delhi.

Our skills range from network planning through to detailed design and construction management. A major focus is on delivering cost-effective solutions – our reputation for this has led to us being commissioned on many design-and-build projects throughout the region, and for all of the strategic planning studies and feasibility studies for new railways in HK since the 1980s, with a total project cost of over US$20 billion. We have most recently been engaged as the consultant to investigate potential new rail schemes in the context of the proposed merger between Hong Kong’s two rail operators – Mass Transit Railway Corporation and Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation.

As rail networks evolve and expand, it is necessary to add new lines at existing stations, or expand existing stations to cope with increases in passenger throughput – we have developed great expertise in this area, with modifications already completed or planned at over 20 different stations, and track diversions completed at three locations. A major issue when planning these modifications is to minimise any impact on existing rail operations; however, a major consideration, particularly at interchanges is to make the stations as convenient as possible.

We have had a major involvement in all stages of the Singapore MRT, both metro lines in Bangkok, the Taipei Rapid Transit, Taiwan High Speed Rail, the Kaohsiung Metro, and the Delhi Metro. With the opening up of the China market, we have recently carried out various assignments for metros in Wuhan , Nanjing and Shenzhen.
