Study of Landslides Occurring in Kowloon and the New Territories in 2006

Maunsell Geotechnical Services Ltd. has been awarded this special term consultancy which deals with the investigation of landslides that occur in 2006. The Landslide Investigation Consultancy (LIC) originated from the recommendations of the Expert Panel which investigated the fatal landslide at Kwun Lung Lau in 1994. The nature of the consultancy requires core team members to remain on standby duty after working hours during the wet season.

In the 2005 LIC, MGSL had to mobilize over 30 staff of all ranks to handle over 200 landslides, half of which occurred on the 2-days of rainfall on 19th and 20th August.

Other objectives of the Assignment include:

  • To provide forensic assessment and evidence for landslides that involve subsequent corner’s inquest.
  • To review the performance of the Government’s Slope Safety System.
  • To advance the understanding of the causes and mechanisms of landslides in the HKSAR.
